Maldini backstory: What’s missing for Origi to join Milan

A phone call with Paolo Maldini has convinced Divock Origi to reject offers from other clubs and join AC Milan instead.

AC Milan are in advanced talks to complete the signing of Divock Origi. The Liverpool centre forward will leave England at the end of the season as a free agent with the Rossoneri set to be his next destination.

The 27-year-old striker will sign a four-year contract at around 4 million euros per season, bonuses included. Origi has decided to reject other offers from England and Germany in favor of a new adventure in Italy.

The Belgium striker has already communicated to Liverpool his decision to not renew the contract because he wants to join AC Milan next season. Liverpool have an option to unilaterally extend Origi’s contract for one more year.

An important role in Origi’s decision to snub offers from other clubs has played Paolo Maldini. The AC Milan technical director had a telephone conversation with the player that made the difference. Maldini explained to him Milan’s ambitious plans for next season and how Origi fits into.

The player is enthusiastic about this new project. Who is missing to close talks is the agreement on bonuses and signing fee the player will receive. The final details on the two aspects are expected to be sorted out very soon. Origi is set to become the third player to join AC Milan from the Premier League after Fikayo Tomori and Olivier Giroud.
